Not only have I had serious feelings of guilt and inadequacy for not being able to give birth medication-free, but now the insurance company is saying that the bill for the epidural is not allowable and they are going to try to stick us with the $1500 bill. I could scream right now.

Insurance companies are seriously mess up these days. Do they really expect mothers to go through the pain of childbirth if they can't afford it.
(not saying you couldn't, but some can't)
I've never heard of them not covering the epi. Was it out of network? If so, they should still pay the allowable amount & the dr. will usually accept that.
Yes, they said it was out of network. As if I had a choice of which anesthesiologist to use! I had no idea that it made a difference. Anyway, I am appealing the insurance company's decision. I also called the doc to see if they will accept the allowable amount. It will take 30 days though. What a PITA! Insurance companies just seem to be out there to screw people and take their money.
Wow! And they decided to tell you now after 7 months, right before Christmas? Ugh... Insurance companies are soooo freakin cruel!!!
