Thanks to my friends, I have discovered that there is a wealth of affordable vanilla beans on ebay!!! I made my first purchase two days ago, and my beans arrived today!!!!!!! Only $6.94 for 11 beans - including the cost of shipping! I am SO excited to get started on my baking with vanilla beans. Cupcake Hero, here I come...

That's an interesting idea -- grocery shopping on ebay! Questions from your young apprentice -- how far does one bean go? i.e. how many are generally used in a recipe?
You would usually use one bean for a recipe, if you were actually using the bean. You slice it open lengthwise, and scrape out the seeds. The seeds are what you use. (You know those tiny black specks you see in vanilla bean ice cream? Those are seeds. They are seriously tiny.) You can also make vanilla extract from the beans though, so that would stretch them a LOT further.
I wouldn't recommend the beans on eBay. Yes, they are affordable but they are junk. Try online for Gourmet beans at Beanilla
I guess I will be the judge of that! Beanilla is pretty expensive. You don't happen to be a salesperson for them, do you? I've gotten tons of recommendations for the company I ordered them from, so I'm not worried. :)
CRAP WHY DIDNT I CHECK EBAY?
I just spent almost $8 for TWO BEANS at the grocery store!!!
