Two Months

Dear Samantha,

Today you are two months old. I can't believe how fast you are growing! This month has been a very busy one for you. You have definitely gotten taller, and your little thighs are getting chunkier. You definitely aren't a rolly polly fat baby, but you sure aren't a skinny baby, either! You are just the perfect size, and you get cuter every day.

In the past couple of weeks you have really started smiling a lot. You aren't just smiling randomly anymore - we are actually getting responsive smiles from you. The other night you smiled and laughed at Daddy for the first time and it was the most amazing, sweet moment for us both. You are especially smiley in the mornings when I get you dressed. We love to look and smile at each other for a long time each morning. You sure make Mommy laugh with your smiles and giggles!

You are getting more and more aware of your surroundings. You are always looking around at things that catch your attention. You love to look at bright lights! There are some paintings that I made of Dexter and Chloe that you just love to look at. The big eyes and the contrast of the black and white fur is very interesting to you. When I put you in the Ergo carrier, you like to stand straight as a board so your head sticks way out the top. You like to look all around and see where we are. The fair was VERY exciting for you!

Your new game is "Stand Up, Sit Down." You like it when we hold you in our laps and you straighten your legs to stand up. You stand up for longer and longer periods of time now. Your legs are getting so strong! Standing up is one of your favorite games to play with Daddy.

The other day you actually rolled over for the first time! The other night you were lying on your tummy and were trying very hard to roll to your back. You needed a little bit of help, so your Pappy put his hand on your foot for you to push off of. Then you rolled all the way onto your back! The next morning while you were at playgroup, you were lying on your back and the next thing I knew, you were on your back - you had quickly rolled over all by yourself! Mommy was SO proud. :)

This month you got to meet another grandparent - your Pappy from Ohio is here visiting. He loves to hold you and play with you! He is already making plans to come out to visit you for your first birthday.

Tomorrow is your 2-month doctor visit. I am excited for them to weigh and measure you so we can see how much you've grown, but I'm also very nervous because you will be getting your first round of vaccinations. I know it's very important for you, and I will feel better having you out and about once you are vaccinated, but I am afraid it will hurt you and you will be very sad. I will be right there to comfort you though. I know you will be a tough girl and will do just fine!

I love you very much, Samantha, and I can't wait to see how much you grow in your 3rd month!

Love,
Mommy

Hot Mama Gowns - My Review

During my pregnancy, I kept seeing people blog and tweet about their glamorous hospital gowns. At first I thought it was a silly idea, but when I started noticing photos of the ugly hospital-issued gowns, it started making sense to me. When Hot Mama Gowns offered a chance to wear and review one of their luxurious gowns, I jumped at the opportunity! I thought sure there was no way they'd choose me, so I was THRILLED when I got the email telling me that I would be the lucky recipient of a Hot Mama Gown - and all I had to do was blog about my experience! Many thanks to Deidrea, the founder of Hot Mama Gowns, for this awesome opportunity. Just before I went on maternity leave, I received a Small gown in the LeAnn pattern. The gown was shipped in such gorgeous packaging - I just had to get a photo of it!
LOVE the packaging!

The "LeAnn" pattern

For those of you who haven't already heard, Hot Mama Gowns are the glamorous alternative to the generic hospital gown. They are made of super soft, comfortable 100% organic cotton and are made in the USA. Unlike an ordinary hospital gown, these gowns snap all the way down the back so your booty won't be hanging out for all to see. Plus, there are two individual ribbon-tied panels in the front to allow for quick, easy, and discreet nursing.
(Click here to see the G-Rated demonstration video)
Ribbon-tied nursing panels

I originally had a hard time deciding if I wanted to wear my gown during labor and delivery and risk getting it stained and dirty, or if I just wanted to wait and wear it during my recovery in the hospital. After going through my childbirth classes I ended up deciding that I wanted to wear my own pajamas during Samantha's birth since I wanted the smell and comfort of my own clothes. So, it was an easy decision to save my Hot Mama Gown for after the birth and during my recovery. (The nightgown that I wore during the birth didn't get messed up, by the way!)

After wearing my Hot Mama Gown for a full day of resting and caring for a newborn, it did get a bit of baby poop, cord blood, breast milk and who knows what else on it, so I decided I wanted to change into a clean hospital gown. I figured I'd put it on backwards so that it would be open in front for nursing. What a surprise - there weren't even snaps on the hospital gown. It only had one lonely little tie at the top! If I put it on with the tie in the back it allowed absolutely no access to the front so it was completely impractical for breastfeeding. I ended up taking it off as soon as I put it on! I decided to wear my Hot Mama Gown for another night rather than downgrade to the useless hospital gown.
The Hot Mama Gowns have snaps!!!

The breastfeeding panels were great. Each panel opens individually with a ribbon tie. It was perfect for nursing in the hospital when I was still learning how to breastfeed Samantha. I could easily open one side at a time without having to figure out clips or deal with pushing extra fabric out of the way. It was so easy, and I loved the functionality of it. I got so many compliments from the nurses on my gown. They all said they had never seen such a thing, and wondered where I got it. And of course, I happily told them!
The only downside to my experience was with the snaps that connect the breastfeeding panels to the skirt. After I washed the gown, the plastic snaps just would not stay closed. It wasn't a big deal since the ribbon ties still keep everything closed, but I ended up replacing the plastic snaps with metal ones just to help keep everything together. Otherwise though, the gown was absolutely great and I loved having it in the hospital. I could have actually used a second one for that second day when I REALLY wanted to change my clothes after finally getting a shower!

Hot Mama Gowns are designed to fit every size Mama - even with a bump! The gown expands to fit a pregnant belly and then contracts to fit after labor and delivery. The gowns come in sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL to fit moms sizes 2-24 (based on your pre-pregnancy size). Sizes XS-L retail for $119 and sizes XL-XXL are $139. They now have available adorable matching swaddling blankets, retailing for $48. I didn't get one of these, but how cute would it be to wrap your baby in a matching blanket!!! Gift certificates are available if you would like to purchase a gown for a hot mama, but aren't sure which size or pattern she would like. The sizes do seem to run large - I usually wear a medium, but I wore a small Hot Mama Gown, and it was definitely roomy enough for me and my belly!

Contact Hot Mama Gowns:

These gowns are so comfortable and versatile that you could wear them much longer than just in the delivery and recovery room. They would work great as a nursing gown at home! I personally didn't choose to continue wearing mine since it's not really the style of pajamas I prefer, but it is definitely comfortable and I will be wearing it again whenever Baby #2 comes along. Thanks again to Deidrea and Hot Mama Gowns for allowing me to feel like a Hot Mama during the birth of my little girl!!!

So sad it's funny.

The other day Samantha was lying on her play mat, having a great time. She was kicking up a storm and waving her arms all around. Suddenly she started screaming as if she was in pain. I ran to help her, trying to figure out what had happened, when I realized that she had grabbed a handful of her own hair, tight to the scalp. Poor baby didn't realize that she was causing her own pain! Her grip kept getting tighter and tighter and she screamed harder and harder. I tried to gently pry her fingers loose, but she just didn't understand what was happening. I wanted to cry with her because it was so obvious she was in pain and at the same time I couldn't help but laugh because the whole situation was pretty funny! I finally got her hand loose and she was instantly calm and completely fine. I doubt she learned anything from this, but I sure hope it won't happen again!!!

Happy Father's Day!

Mike and Samantha's first Father's Day was very eventful! Mike had just finished at his temp job on Friday, so we decided to celebrate on Saturday by going to the beach. This was Samantha's first real trip to the beach, other than a walk on the sand, and she loved it! She really enjoyed feeling the breeze on her face and looking at the bright blue sky. The sound of the waves was so soothing it almost put her to sleep. She was a little too excited by the new experience to completely fall asleep though! During a diaper change, the tide suddenly came in and I had to quickly scoop her and all her things up before the waves could drench everything. Such perfect timing, eh? After our beach day, we had some friends over to BBQ. It's always so much fun to have people up to the house!
That night was our friend Jana's birthday, and we took Samantha out for her first restaurant dinner. She did great! We brought a couple bottles along, and we hardly heard a peep out of her. We went to the Old Spaghetti Factory, and Sam loved looking at all the interesting chandeliers. She really loves looking at lights!
Father's Day morning we woke up and made banana waffles for Dad. After relaxing for a while, we headed out for a day at the fair. We had so much fun! Sam slept most of the time, but she woke up when we were in the garden and had a great time looking at everything. She really enjoyed walking across the pond, looking at the ducks. She has started standing up in the Ergo carrier so she can hold her head higher and look around, feeling the breeze on her face. When we got home from the fair, we made Chicken Parmigiana for dinner - one of Dad's favorites. I also made Candy Apple Salad, a tasty treat he found at the deli once, but have never seen again. Yum!
All in all, it was an awesome Father's Day weekend, if I don't say so myself! ;)

Six Weeks

Samantha's First Playdate

Samantha had her first playdate at 6 weeks old. This was a special playdate - the mommies got together to make korker hairbows while the babies played. Samantha was a little too young to really play with the other babies, but she loved to watch them. She was totally mesmerized by watching them play with their toys! She also did great at tummy time, holding her head up nice and high. Not only did she roll from her tummy to her side, but she also rolled back to her tummy again and pushed herself up with her arms.

The korker bows were a bit harder to make than we had planned, but we got some cute ones out of it. We made a yellow, green and blue one to match a couple of non-pink outfits, and a red, white and blue one for the 4th of July!

Another Cloth Diaper Update

First of all, my apologies for my lack of posts lately. Typing one-handed is so painfully slow, I've been avoiding typing any more than one or two lines at a time! Once Sam can hold up her own head, hopefully I'll be able to type with that other hand again. :)

Cloth diapering has been going well so far so I thought I'd update and share my likes and dislikes with what we've been using.

Prefolds:
These work well for me, but I don't like to use them in the middle of the night when the light is dim. Mike hasn't wanted to attempt using them at all. The snappi is really easy to use - much better than diaper pins! I keep a few prefolds, a cover, and a snappi in the diaper bags since they are thin and easy to pack.

Fitteds:
I LOVE my Thirsties Fab Fitteds. They are shaped just like a disposable, but are soft and fluffy and look super comfortable. I use these in the middle of the night since they are so easy. I also keep one of these in the diaper bag for inconvenient diaper changing locations. I use a Thirsties cover with these. These are easy enough for Mike to use, though they do require two separate pieces (diaper and cover). I want to buy more of these and try some other brands of fitteds as well.

All-In-Ones:
I don't love my Thirsties All In One diapers. I just can't get them to stop leaking around the legs. Some people love them, but they just don't work for me. It's a pity because they are SUPER easy, and Mike liked them too. I've decided to sell my X-Small AIOs for $10 each. They are hardly used, so it's a great deal. I'm hoping that someone who likes them will be able to use them! I have them for sale on Craigslist, (click for link) if you or anyone you know would like them.

Pockets:
We have now been using a lot of pocket diapers. I have a lot of One-Size pocket diapers. Right now they are kind of huge on Sam, since they are all folded up into the newborn size, but I really love how easy they are. I also love that I'll be able to continue using the same diapers on her for a long time!

GroBaby: I really like the GroBaby diapers. They have snap-in inserts, as well as a booster liner. I haven't needed to use a booster yet. The GroBabys come in super cute patterns, which I love. The velcro is nice and wide and soft and looks comfortable. The inserts snap out and can be replaced with clean inserts, as long as the outer shell is still clean. We have had a few leaking episodes with these, so we have to really pay attention when we put them on to make sure that there are no gaps around the legs or waist. I really like that even when folded into the newborn size, these diapers aren't too bulky. So far I am really liking these.

FuzziBuns: I just purchased a few of the Fuzzi Buns One Size diapers. Generally they seem great, and I love how adjustable they are. However, I'm having a hard time fitting them to Sam correctly. I set the leg elastic on 6, and they were way too tight around her thighs. Then I set them to 5, and they were too loose! (Also, I'm confused...the recommended settings for a newborn are 4 in the waist and 6 in the legs. But there are two settings for the legs - top and bottom. Should they both be on 6? Or each set on 3 to total 6?) Then, I thought I had it right, but when I snapped the diaper on tight, some of the inner fleece showed around the legs, and we got major leakage. I know you kind of have to see them on Sam in person to help me get a perfect fit, but any advice would be appreciated!

BumGenius: So far these are my favorites. My only complaint is that when they are folded up into the newborn size, they are huge and give Sam a huge bum. Otherwise, they are super absorbent, very easy to put on, and we haven't had one single leak. These are going to be awesome once she gets a little bigger and we can unfold them into a slightly larger size. I would love to buy more of these!

I really want to try the Apple Cheeks diapers. I'm also interested in Happy Heinys and Kissaluvs. Does anyone have any other recommendations for me? What diapers do you like/dislike?

Family Visit #1 and Sam's First Illness

Samantha had her first family visitors at one month old. Her Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Joanna all came to visit for a few days from Colorado, and several of her great aunts and uncles from California all came to visit for a day as well. It was a very exciting day, getting passed around from relative to relative!

Unfortunately, Sam had her first illness while everyone was visiting too, coming down with a case of the stomach flu. I had been sick the previous week but I completely forgot about that when Samantha started vomiting after each meal a few days later. When she was still getting sick the next morning, we decided to take her to the doctor to make sure she was okay. Due to her age (4 weeks) the doctor wanted to make sure she didn't have Pyloric Stenosis, a stomach obstruction that can occur between 3-5 weeks, so we took her to Children's Hospital to get a stomach ultrasound. The next morning, the day of her ultrasound, Mike woke up with the flu. At that point we remembered my previous illness, and realized that Sam probably had the flu as well. We still went ahead with the ultrasound, just in case, and found out that her pyloris was perfectly normal and we had nothing to worry about. She was feeling like her usual self by then anyway. Poor little baby though, to have a stomach flu at one month old!

Unfortunately we spread our sickness to my family. (Sorry about that!) Samantha didn't seem to be too bothered by her illness though and had a great time with family. She was still perfectly happy and calm in spite of being sick. Now, in just a couple more weeks, her Pappy and GramE from Ohio will be visiting. July will be a fun and busy month of family visitors!

One Month

Dear Samantha,

Today you are one month old. I can't believe you have already been with us for an entire month already! You are growing so fast. At two weeks, when we found out that you had already gained over a pound and grown almost two inches, I couldn't believe it because you still seemed so tiny to me. Now I can definitely see the difference though. You have grown out of your newborn-size clothing, and are now wearing the 0-3 month size. I was a little sad to find that you've outgrown your cute little hospital beanie, too. It seemed so sad to have to pack away clothes that you only wore for a few weeks! I'm having fun dressing you up in new outfits now though!

Over the past month, you have become more and more aware. You are awake longer each day, and you love to look all around at your surroundings. You love to lay in your entertainment gym and look in the mirror and kick the hanging toys to make noises. You love it when Daddy comes home from work to play with you. He gets you so excited sometimes that you get the hiccups! At four weeks we decided to let you try having a bottle so that Daddy could feed you sometimes. You are doing great with it! We are amazed at how much you can eat. You love to look us in the eye while you eat - it's very cute! You love to look at faces, and you are learning to make all sorts of funny faces of your own. We are seeing more and more smiles, and you are playing with your tongue a lot now. Sometimes we even hear giggles out of you while you are dreaming. You are going to be so much fun when you start smiling and giggling in response to us!

It is so much fun to watch you learn and grow. We love you very, very much, and we are excited to see you grow even more!

Love,
Mom

Cloth Diaper Update

Well, we did it - we finally made the complete switch to cloth diapers. Last night we used up the last of the disposable stash, so this is it - cloth only from here on out! I was getting discouraged at first because she kept leaking out of the Thirsties All In Ones. I think her legs are just too skinny for that type of diaper still. But, we have had success with the Thirsties fitteds and covers. I was still having a hard time with cloth diapering because we kept running out of diapers, and it was getting difficult to keep up with them - even doing laundry every day.

Now that I've gotten over my fear of using prefolds, we are doing great! I have been using the jelly roll fold, and along with my Snappi, they are working great! I'm getting faster and faster at putting them on. I plan to use the prefolds with Thirsties covers during the day and the fitteds and covers at night, when it will be more difficult to put on the Snappi in the dark. We will save the All In Ones for Daddy to use. (I've found that if I use a fleece liner they don't seem to leak quite as often.) Sam's little legs are getting pudgier every day too, so hopefully it won't be long before the AIO's stop leaking! We are also using cloth wipes, and it's been great. I do have to keep up with them regularly (washing and putting them back in the warmer with more solution) but it's not too complicated.

I'm feeling much more confident about cloth diapering now, and we are loving it!

First Bath

Last night Samantha had her first bath! Her belly button finally healed well enough for us to give her a real bath submerged in water. She did great! I've seen so many photos of screaming babies during baths that I expected the same from Sam. Surprisingly, she didn't cry at all! She seemed a little surprised at times, but over all she seemed to actually like it. She feels so soft and clean and smells nice and sweet now. :)

This is different...
It feels kind of good!
All snuggly and warm!

Two Weeks

2 Weeks - Doctor Visit

May 21

Samantha is 2 weeks old! Her 2-week checkup went well. At 2 weeks they make sure that babies are at least back up to their birth weight. Our little eater is WELL above hers - she has already gained over a pound, and is now 8lb 6oz. She has also gotten taller, and is 20 3/4" long. She is definitely eating well! She's still not pooping very often, but since everything else is just fine, it looks like her system is just slower than the average baby. Not to worry! Her belly button is almost completely healed now, so soon we'll be able to give her her first real bath.

Her next checkup is at 2 months!

May 15 - Due Date!

Dear Samantha,

Today is your due date. Your mommy and daddy were hoping and hoping that you would be here by now, but secretly thought that you would arrive late. We are so happy that you are already here, and now you are already 9 days old!

Life with you so far has been wonderful. You are such a good baby. You make all sorts of funny faces and make your daddy laugh and laugh. You only cry when you really need something, and you usually calm down quickly. You get up a lot during the night to eat, but you always get a good block of 2-4 hours in the early, early mornings so we all eventually get a little bit of sleep. You are a very good eater, and you already weigh 7lb 8oz. It didn't take you long to get back to your birth weight and then some! You are starting to make lots of cute little noises now, and we catch you with little smiles all the time. You are starting to make noises that sound like laughter, which makes Mommy and Daddy laugh and laugh. You get cuter and cuter and every day, and we have so much fun trying to figure out who you look most like. So far we think you have Daddy's ears and eyes, and definitely his coloring. You definitely have Mom's nose, mouth, and long fingers and toes. You are a very pretty baby!

We love you very, very much, and we are so glad you are here!!!

Love,
Mom

***********************************************************************
These past 9 days have been so incredible for me. I can just look at Samantha with awe and amazement for hours on end. I cannot believe that this beautiful little person is the same little baby that was inside me for so long. She grew so perfectly and completely in my belly. It's almost hard to believe that I already pushed her out and that phase of our lives is complete. It's a very weird sensation for me to realize that after 9 months, I am not pregnant anymore. It's actually a very bittersweet feeling. I loved being pregnant - I loved that closeness that I had with my bab. I loved feeling every little movement from her, and knowing that she was always with me and taken care of. I know that it is 100 times more wonderful to have her here with me on the outside where I can see her and interact with her and Mike can also spend time with her now, but I can't help but feel a little bit of sadness that she is not connected to me so closely anymore.

We really have been doing quite well aside from all the feedings, changes, etc. I don't really have the baby blues, but I definitely am feeling the effects of the hormones. I'm so emotional and I feel like crying quite often. The other day I found my Bella Band in my drawer and it set me off crying because it reminded me that I wasn't pregnant anymore. I cry with amazement when I remember the moment Samantha was born. I cry when she is crying and I don't know what she needs. And no matter how hard my days may be, I always cry with joy at how wonderful my little baby girl is. Each day really does get easier and easier. I'm looking forward to spending time with her as she gets older, and as things get easier and easier for us. But at the same time, I'm glad that we are planning to do this one more time so that I can experience the incredible wonder of pregnancy again. I'm so thankful for Mike, who has been extremely supportive of me as I recover from Samantha's birth and go through all these postpartum phases. I couldn't do it without him!

My belly, 1 week postpartum.

My belly is getting smaller each day. The swelling has all gone away, and I can wear my wedding ring again, finally! I can almost fit in my pre-pregnancy jeans now. I'm pretty sure I'll lose all the weight quickly - now it's just a matter of getting my muscle back again! As soon as I'm done recovering and cleared to exercise, I can't wait to get back in shape!

One Week

Our Birth Story

Here it is...Samantha's birth story! For you casual readers of my blog, I must warn you that this is a birth story, so if you are grossed out by the details of such things, you may want to stop reading now. ;)

My water broke around 7:00PM on Thursday, May 4th. I was in the kitchen fixing dinner when I suddenly felt a couple of gushes. At first I didn't think much of it, assuming it was just more of the usual, but when it kept on going, I realized that something weird was going on. I ran to the bathroom and discovered that I had a constant leak, almost like I was peeing, but couldn't control it. I called to Mike and told him that I was pretty sure my water had just broken. He didn't believe me at first, so we just hung out for a bit to see if things continued. I had accidentally left the stove on when I ran out of the kitchen, so we had to spend a bit of time cleaning things up! Within a few minutes after the first gush of water, I started having some mild cramping, like menstrual cramps. After we finished eating, I finally convinced Mike that my water had, in fact, broken. The waterfall just wasn't stopping! I called my doctor's office and let them know what had happened. Since it was after hours, I had to wait a little while for him to call me back. Within an hour, Dr. Biter called me and asked how I was doing. I told him that I felt mildly crampy, but that I was not having any contractions. He recommended that we hang out at home for a while until things got started, and to try and get some rest.

Since the baby's birth was now imminent, we took advantage of the time we had before labor started and got all of our final preparations ready. Mike installed the car seat, and we put all the last details into our hospital bags. We went to bed around 10:00 PM, and got a couple hours of sleep. Around 1:00 AM, the contractions were strong enough to wake me up. They were still pretty mild, and I was able to breathe through them easily enough. By 2:00 AM, the contractions were strong enough that Mike woke up and started helping me relax through the contractions. I stayed in bed (and on the floor a couple of times) and used the relaxation techniques I had learned to get through them. I found that visualizing myself floating on the ocean worked the best for me at that point. Sometime in the middle of the night Mike and I both felt hungry so we ate some toast and I went through a lot of juice and water. I wanted to be sure I kept my energy up since I wasn't sure how long I would be in labor for the rest of the day. My contractions were about 2 minutes apart, and 1 minute long. While they were very regular, I didn't feel like they were strong enough to be very productive so I didn't call the doctor right away. This entire time my bag of waters continued to gush and leak continually. We ended up falling asleep again around 5:30 AM (Wednesday, May 5th) when the contractions eased up a bit, and didn't get up until about 9:00 AM.

While I was getting cleaned up and ready for the day, the doctor's office called to check in on me. I told them that my contractions had really slowed down and were only coming inconsistently, about 10-15 minutes apart, and they were not strong. We decided that I would go into the office to get checked and make sure that things were going okay. Mike and I stopped for a smoothie for some extra energy to get us through the morning, and then headed to the office. It was a busy morning, and we had to wait for a while. I had about 2-3 contractions in the lobby while we waited, but they weren't too bad. I could still talk through them. Dr. Biter checked me for dilation, which was extremely uncomfortable. It felt like a strong contraction that was not natural. I am so glad that I waited to have this done until it was necessary! He found that I was 4.5cm dilated, and about 90% effaced. This was great news and we were very excited. He said that a lip of my cervix was blocking the baby's head, so he had moved it out of the way to help get things started. (Normally we wouldn't have done this, but since my water had already broken more than 12 hours ago, the countdown was on. Most doctors will make you go to the hospital immediately when your water breaks, and require you to give birth within 24 hours. Since my labor still hadn't really gotten started, we wanted to avoid going to the hospital too early, since there was a good chance it would lead to a C-section.) Dr. Biter said that after being checked, labor would probably pick up again. He suggested that I eat lots of protein and walk, walk, walk. Since my bag of waters had ruptured, he said that my labor needed to get going actively again by 7:00 PM.

Mike and I went out to get breakfast, and I made sure to order something with lots of protein. Then we headed to the beach in Encinitas and walked for about a mile up and down the beach. My contractions started coming pretty regularly, about 1 minute long and 2-3 minutes apart. It was very nice, just walking and talking together, and during each contraction I had to stop and hold onto Mike. I wasn't able to walk and talk through the contractions anymore, but I still didn't feel like they were all that strong. The beach visualizations were very helpful at this point since I was hearing the waves crash in the background. When we were done at the beach I knew I wasn't ready to go to the hospital yet, so we decided to keep walking. We went to the Botanical Garden and walked around there. It was really nice - since it was the middle of a week day, there were not many people there and we had a lot of privacy. We walked all around the gardens for a few hours, looking at plants and discussing what we could plant in our own garden. My contractions continued to intensify and come more frequently throughout the day. I held onto Mike for some of them, leaned on a bench for others, and once or twice I tried squatting through a contraction. I found that staying vertical was the easiest. The baby's head was getting lower and lower, and it was getting harder and harder to sit. I focused on my breathing through all of them, and used several different visualizations. I liked using the mental imagery of an opening flower while we were in the gardens. We had a great afternoon at the Botanical Garden so we decided to buy an orchid from their gift shop to help us remember our day in labor. We will plant it in our outdoor garden once we get it landscaped. After a few hours in the gardens, my contractions were getting really intense. They were lasting closer to 2 minutes now, and were coming about 2 minutes apart. I could definitely not walk or talk through them now. We called the doctor's office again, and they suggested that we come in to get checked again.

We got to the office around 4:45 PM. Dr. Biter saw me right away and found that I was about 5.5 cm dilated. By this point I was getting a bit nervous about the baby, so he did a quick ultrasound to check her position, heart beat, etc. Her head was very low, and everything else looked great. He recommended that we continue walking around a while longer since things still weren't moving that fast. The less time we spent at the hospital, the better. We headed out to do some more walking and had a hard time finding somewhere to go. We were trying to find a park, but didn't know the area well enough. I had to use the restroom so we ended up stopping at a gas station. We spent quite a while in that parking lot since, after being checked for dilation again, my contractions were coming very quickly now. I was starting to get really frustrated and felt like I needed somewhere to go and feel settled. All the wandering around was getting irritating to me. We considered going to the beach again but I was having a hard time making any decisions at this point. I was still focusing on my breathing through each contraction, but I was having a hard time relaxing. Mike helped me come to the conclusion that we should probably head to the hospital. He knew how nervous I was about going there and getting stuck on a 24 hour countdown, so we discussed it for quite a while between contractions. At the hospital, I'd be able to change my clothes and get comfortable, and we could set up our room so that I would feel like I had a place to relax, rather than keep wandering around. My contractions were getting very intense now and were coming every minute. I wanted to be sure that we did not go into the hospital until I was sure that my contractions were going to continue at that rate, so we agreed to go sit in the hospital parking lot until I felt ready to go inside.

Around 5:45 PM (still Wednesday, May 5th) we arrived at the hospital. We stayed out in the parking lot for quite a while so I could make sure my contractions were going to continue at a regular pace. When I finally decided that I felt ready to go in, I was hit by a wave of emotions. It suddenly became very real to me that we were about to have a baby. I cried for a while, worked through another contraction, and we headed inside. At this point I could hardly talk or answer any questions. Thankfully they got us inside and set up in the LDR (labor, delivery, and recovery) room quickly. I changed into my nightgown and the nurse checked my vital signs. She wanted to hook me up to the electronic fetal monitor which is something I really did not want to do. I told her right away that we wanted to have a natural birth. She said that was fine, but that they needed to monitor both me and the baby for 30 minutes. I agreed to the monitor as long as she promised we would be able to take it off after 30 minutes so that I could keep moving around. Contractions were a lot more painful when I was laying down, so I couldn't wait to get the monitor off. Everything looked good with me and baby, so we were able to get up again quickly. I wanted to wait for Dr. Biter before getting checked for dilation again, since I had just been checked at his office a short while ago. After a few more contractions, he arrived at the hospital and said that he did need to check me again. He found that I was at 6cm, which was a slight improvement. I was still feeling good about everything and Mike and I decided to labor in the shower for a while. I lost all track of time while we were in there, but I think it was at least 2 hours, if not more. I sat on the birth ball in the shower, and Mike stood behind me, helping me through each contraction. My new night nurse came while we were in the shower, and she came in several times to check the baby's heart rate. The water felt so good! I could have stayed in there all night, but I eventually felt very thirsty and decided to get out to try some new positions.

My contractions were getting stronger and stronger now. We tried several different positions and found that only the vertical positions were working for me. The birth ball worked pretty well, but any other sitting or lying position was incredibly painful since baby's head was so low in my pelvis. I felt like I couldn't bend the lower half of my body. Mike kept encouraging me to switch positions regularly to keep labor going. The longer I stayed in one position, the farther apart my contractions were getting. It was really difficult for me each time I switched positions, since it would instantly start a new contraction. I was still doing really well with my breathing and relaxation. The nurse came in a couple more times during the evening to check me for dilation. (Every time I had to lie on the bed to get checked for dilation, I would get the shakes REALLY badly. The nurse kept telling me it was a normal part of labor.) Each time she checked me, she found that I was still at 6cm. This was discouraging news, but we continued to shift positions to try to keep the dilation going. By about 10:00 PM, the nurse told me that Dr. Biter had said that if I didn't make any more progress in the next couple of hours, he was going to recommend Pitocin to kick things up a notch. I really didn't want Pitocin, so we tried as hard as we could to keep labor going. Around midnight, the nurse checked me one last time and found that I was still at 6cm. She let Mike and I discuss things for a while and decide what we wanted to do.

At this point my contractions were getting really painful, and I was getting very discouraged. I knew that normally this would have been a sign that I was in transition and that I was almost there, but since I had been stuck at 6cm for 6 hours, I knew that I was not in transition. This was really hard for me to deal with since I so badly wanted to do this naturally. However, between the pain and the physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, I wasn't able to relax through my contractions anymore, and I could hardly deal with them as it was. I knew there was no way I'd be able to handle the intensified Pitocin contractions naturally. If I was going to do the Pitocin, I'd have to get an epidural too. We looked through my birth notes, which included my personal thoughts on the epidural. I understood in advance that sometimes things just don't go the way you hope or plan, so I had written out a few circumstances in which I would be willing to get an epidural. The main reason I had written as an "OK" was that if labor goes on for over 24 hours and I am completely exhausted and really struggling with labor, an epidural can be a compassionate choice to allow me to get some rest. I had noted that I would ONLY do it if Dr. Biter personally recommended it. I did not want to allow the hospital staff to talk me into it. After discussing it for a while, Mike and I realized that our current situation was precisely the situation I had allowed for in my birth plan. I knew there was no way I could physically continue labor with Pitocin and no epidural, and due to my ruptured membranes (which happened 29 hours ago at this point) I didn't really have much choice but to intervene and try to jump start labor enough to get me past 6cm. The nurse reminded me that an epidural would require a few other things that I didn't want, such as the electronic fetal monitor and an IV. My main reason for not wanting these things was that I wanted to be able to move around unrestricted, and did not want to be confined to the bed. By this point I was too exhausted to move around anyway, and all I wanted was to be able to lie down without pain, so Mike and I both agreed to go ahead with the epidural and Pitocin. I was a little bummed about it but I felt 100% sure that I was making the right decision.

The anesthesiologist came in shortly after and talked me through everything. He was very understanding and made me feel comfortable. I was pretty nervous about the needle, but I knew it wouldn't be as bad as the contractions. At 1:00 AM (Thursday, May 6) they hooked me up to the IV and then began the epidural. We had to pause a couple of times for my contractions to pass. I couldn't WAIT until I was not feeling them anymore! I felt a bit of a sting that made me uncomfortable, but it didn't last long. I felt one last contraction at full strength but it didn't last long - the epidural kicked in during the middle of it. I didn't feel anything else after this point. I did get the shakes really badly when I first got the epidural. The nurses told me it was a normal part of labor, but I think it was because I was so cold. There was a vent right above the bed, and when Mike adjusted the temperature, the shakes stopped. They started my Pitocin drip at the minimum recommended amount. The nurse got me comfortable, and Mike and I both fell asleep quickly. Two hours later the nurse and Dr. Biter came in and checked me (I didn't feel it at all this time!!!) and found that I was at 9cm. They said they'd be right back. What felt like minutes later, everyone was back, along with more nurses. They woke Mike up and said that we were about to have a baby! I wasn't feeling any contractions, but I was feeling a LOT of pressure in my bottom. Each time I had a contraction I would feel this pressure. Everyone got in place to help me push. I was able to pull back my own legs and each time I felt the pressure, I took a deep breath and released it, then took 3 more deep breaths, pushing while I held my breath each time. I didn't feel any pain, but I felt like I was pushing harder than I possibly could. Everyone could see my baby's head, but it was difficult pushing her past the pubic bone. It felt like I was pushing forever, and I was getting frustrated. (I know I started getting snappy after a while...everyone was encouraging me to push past it, and I kept telling them that I WAS pushing as hard as I could and it just wasn't working!) Just when I felt like she would never be born, everyone gathered around and everyone got excited - I had done it - my baby's head was born! Dr. Biter caught her head and pulled her a bit of the way out and then let me hold her and pull her the rest of the way out. I could see her little face looking at me as I pulled her the out of me and held her to my chest. At 3:54 AM, Thursday, May 6th, my daughter was born! While it felt like the pushing took a very long time to me, I actually pushed for less than an hour. I had my perineum massaged with oil during the entire birth, and I only had one tiny little internal tear. Dr. Biter stitched it up so quickly that I didn't even notice he had done it. I overheard the nurse asking Mike if we wanted to keep the placenta and I noticed that she was already packaging it up for us. I was shocked when I realized that it had already been delivered. I had been expecting to have to do at least a little pushing to get it out!

We spent a couple of hours with the baby on my chest, skin to skin. I tried to nurse her right away and successfully got her to nurse from both breasts. She was a natural! I was thrilled since I had been really nervous about breastfeeding. Little Samantha is absolutely perfect. She weighed 7lbs, 5oz, and was 19 inches long. She has lots and lots of dark hair, which Mom and Dad are both thrilled about! She was born with a little cone towards the side of her head, which went away within the first day. Her head had been coming down the birth canal at a strange angle, which is why I was having such a hard time dilating and pushing her out.

All in all, I am very happy with the way things went. I think I am still coming to terms with everything. I still think about it constantly and I feel like I am justifying things in my mind. After re-reading this birth story, I am brought to tears when I got to the part about having to get the epidural. I do feel a bit of sadness that I did not get to experience a 100% natural birth. I also feel a little disappointed that I have to tell people that I couldn't do it, and I know I missed out on the euphoric feelings that often come from a natural birth. At the same time, I am very proud of myself for going as long as I did without medication. I went for for 29 hours from the time my water broke until we realized that medication would be necessary. Not many women can say that they labored naturally for 29 hours! I also feel okay about everything, because the reason I got the epidural was the ONE reason I had listed in my birth plan that medication would be okay. While I am still a bit sad about the missed experience, I still can say I feel no regret about the way things went.

I am so thankful for my doctor who allowed me to stay home and allow things to progress with labor naturally, rather than sending me to the hospital right away. I am also very happy with the way things went at the hospital. I had been very nervous about whether or not the staff would give me a hard time about trying for a natural birth, so I was very happy to find that they didn't question it at all. They happily complied with my wishes and never once bothered me about getting pain medication or any other unwanted interventions. They let me wait until I talked to Dr. Biter before suggesting anything. The hospital was a bit slow in getting us to our room and we had to switch rooms an extra time since the birthing wing was so full, but it really wasn't a problem. All of our nurses were great, and the staff was very helpful and nice. I am so very happy with the way everything went and the way our birth was handled. I'm so incredibly thankful for Mike, who helped me get through everything, and was my support. I couldn't have done it without him! I'm not ready to get pregnant and have another baby right away just yet, but the memory of the contractions is already fading away as I spend time with my beautiful daughter. She is worth it all!!!

Samantha's First Doctor Appointment

Sam had her first doctor visit today. It was quite eventful! We brought her into the office, and the nurse asked us to strip Samantha down. We were about to take off her diaper when we heard a massive blowout. Of course I was thrilled, since she has been behind on her poops, but boy, what a mess!!! After getting measured, we put her in the baby scale - still naked - and she peed all over the place! When we brought her back in the office, she peed all over the table. I couldn't stop laughing. :D

She is doing great. She weighed in at 7lb, 6oz, so she has already gained an ounce from her original birth weight. Her first night in the hospital she was 7lb, 1oz, so she gained it back fast. The average for babies getting back to their birth weight is at about one week, so she is ahead of the game. My little girl can definitely eat! We were having a bit of trouble getting her to latch on lately due to some engorgement issues, but we have several tips to help us now, and things are getting back to normal. Lately she's been eating every 1 1/2 hours or so. I can't wait until we can space out the feedings a bit more! All I do these days is feed her, change her, nap, and then do it all over again. I am loving it though. :)

Sam's color is good - no jaundice. She did lose her umbilical cord a bit early yesterday, because it got bumped. Mom felt SOOO bad - I didn't know what to do! It looks okay though. It's still a bit goopy, but the doc put some medicine on it to help dry it up. She'll have a cute belly button in no time! Everything else with her is right on track, and we go back again next week when she turns 2 weeks old.

We have all been doing great here at home. Mike has been a lifesaver since he's been home from work. He helps out with all the cooking, cleaning, and all kinds of support for me. He goes back to work tomorrow, and I'm a little nervous. I'm going to have to make some adjustments to be able to find time to take care of myself when he's not here. I'm doing pretty well. I'm still really sore and always tired, and I get extremely emotional, but I am very happy, and I know it's worth it all. Samantha is still waking up every 1 to 1 1/2 hours most of the night, usually until around 5 am. From that point we can usually get sleep in 2 to 2 1/2 hour blocks until around 9 am. It's been getting easier to deal with, but I'm looking forward to having her sleep in longer chunks of time at night!

For those of you waiting for my birth story, it is coming! I wrote the draft, and it is LONG, so be prepared. I just need to find some time to sit down and proof read it, and I should have it up by the end of the week. (No promises though...I can make no promises these days!) I have no idea how mommy bloggers do it. I have NO time to do anything these days, and blogging just isn't priority right now. I'll do my best to keep you all updated as I have the time. Right now Sammy is sleeping all cuddled up in the Moby Wrap. She loves this thing! :)

She's Here!!!!

The wait is finally over - little Samantha Day Peters was born on Thursday, May 6th, at 3:54 am. She weighed 7lbs, 5oz, and was 19" long.

I will post again with my birth story and more news about our little angel once I get some free time to collect my thoughts!

38 Week Doctor Appointment

Today I had my 38 week doctor visit. Everything went well. I haven't gained any more weight since Thursday (that's a relief!), and my blood pressure and everything looks good.

I talked with Dr. Biter a bit about checking for dilation, and I was happy to find that he agrees with me. He also feels that it is unnecessary, especially since I am planning to do this naturally. All it would give us is a number that really doesn't mean anything either way. So, we are just going to wait and let things happen on their own!

He said I am still measuring right on, Baby's heart rate is great, and he checked her position. He said that she is still head down...WAY down. As I know very well! My daughter is such a good little girl already, getting into position! Now if she would only decide to grace us with her presence sometime soon! :)

38 Weeks

Today I am 38 weeks pregnant, and it is the first day of May. MAY. My baby is going to be born THIS MONTH! As ready as I am, it's still hard to believe that my due date is only two weeks away. These past two weeks have already flown by!

Interesting tidbit: Tuesday is the most popular day for babies to be born. I was actually born on a Tuesday! Could this mean Baby will arrive on the 4th, 11th, 18th, or 25th? Saturdays are the least common days for births, so there is less chance that she will actually arrive on her due date.
Not much is new with Baby this week. She's probably reached her birth weight, and her lungs, brain, and immune system are continuing to develop, and will continue to do so after birth. She's probably about as long as a leek now, give or take a few inches. We are still guessing that she's going to be longer! Her little fists have a nice, firm grasp now, and soon she'll be grabbing onto our fingers!
I'm still doing about the same. The Braxton Hicks contractions and abdominal cramps have been increasing over the past few days, but so far I haven't had any painful or real contractions. I'm trying to walk more now to encourage her to keep moving down. She's already very low and is down in my pelvis, so we're really just waiting for her to decide to make her exit at this point! I'm still getting LOTS of electric tingles down there as she settles in more and more. I occasionally feel some kicks in the ribs, but for the most part her extremities are in my sides at about belly button height. I'm having a harder and harder time sleeping at night, but naps come very easily, so I'm taking advantage of being able to catch up on my sleep during the day!
38 Weeks

The nesting is coming along very well, although I feel like my To Do list just isn't getting any shorter! We have the glider and ottoman in place now, and I sewed a car seat cover. We put together the stroller, but we still need to install the car seat base. Hopefully I can convince Mike to help me with that this weekend, or I'll be doing it myself soon! The first priority on my list this week is sewing the curtain panels and then hanging them along with the decorative valance. I have a few other fun sewing projects, but those can come later, if necessary. It's been so much fun getting the nursery in order!

The car seat cover I sewed. I love that it matches the seat and stroller so perfectly! :)

My next doctor appointment is on Monday. I still don't want to be checked for dilation, since it really serves no purpose and could introduce infection or strip my membranes. Mike is really anxious to know though, so I'll discuss it with my doctor. I'd rather just let things happen naturally though! I am also going to discuss with him our preferred timing for leaving for the hospital. We want to stay home as long as possible, and since I'm GBS-negative, there's no reason for us to get there any earlier. Right now the plan is to leave home when the contractions are 2-3 minutes apart.

We are definitely getting excited for things to start happening!
